Early in the founding of Natollonia, the abandoned copper mine of the northeast was explored. Upon discovery that they still contained vast amounts of copper ore, Coppertown was founded.
Unfortunately, the majority of the people, specifically the ones who made up the force of miners, were Greivar, beings created from scratch with brains constructed using the same circuitry found in artificially intelligent systems. These beings could not make the sound "ow", for they felt no pain, so it became known as Coppertone.
The city was constructed 10km east of one of the largest open-pit copper mines on Micras. At 4.5km wide and nearly 1.6km deep, it removes 513kt of material from the pit daily in modern times, yielding upward of 1000 metric tons of copper per day, along with smaller amounts of gold, silver, and molybdenum. The ore is processed at the Coppertone Smelting Facilities, which is connected to the Coppertone Sun Protection Cream Factory.
